Various engineering, basic sciences and humanities departments at NIT Sikkim offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes leading to B.Tech, M.Tech or Ph.D. degrees.

Undergraduate B.Tech Programmes
The institute admits students from all over the country to its undergraduate B.Tech program through Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Mains) conducted by Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) every year and DASA (Direct Admission of students abroad), admissions to which are coordinated by a group of NITs annually. The institute currently offers four year B.Tech courses in six departments namely:

Post-graduate M.Tech Programmes
Presently, the institute offers M.Tech program in the department of Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering and admits students through Centralized Counseling for M.Tech (CCMT), a system wherein students with valid GATE score can fill one CCMT Application form and apply to all the programs of all the participating institutions to which they are eligible.
Post-Graduate Phd Programmes
The Institute offers PhD programs in the following departments/fields under ‘Visvesvaraya Ph.D. scheme in Electronic Design and Information Technology’ for full time PhD program, sponsored by Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India:


Departments


Computer Science and Engineering
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering has a core objective of imparting knowledge in both theoretical and practical aspects, equipping students with the ability to tackle complex real-world problems. The Department offers a diligently crafted curriculum that enables students to develop vital skills and are facilitated by well-equipped laboratories with the latest technologies.
The faculty members in the Department are actively engaged in research activities focusing on machine learning, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, content-centric networking, and the Internet of Things (IoT). These research endeavours receive funding from prestigious organisations such as MeitY, DST, and the Government of India. Moreover, the department explores other emerging fields that encourage student engagement in research work beyond their regular curriculum. The Department has established collaborations with several reputed institutes and industries to expose students to real-world problems and opportunities. Additionally, regularly organised seminars and workshops to keep the students updated with the latest advancements in the field.

  • PARAM Kanchenjunga Supercomputing Facility: 32x16 cores. Head Node (Fujitsu RX300 $8.4 Intel Xeon E5-2650 v2 processor @2.6 GHz), 28+4 Compute Nodes (Fujitsu RX200, RX350 $8).Interconnects (Gigabit Ethernet and Infiniband), OS (RHEL 6.5, kernel 2.6.32-431.el6.x86_64], InClus cluster management toolkit.
  • Computer Science Lab: The CSE Lab has 25 i3 and 25 i7 based PCs with CST studio and other high end software.
  • Cloud Computing Lab: The lab has 22 state-of-the-art systems (Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40 Ghz, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD) with Linux and Windows Platforms.

  • Electronics and Communication Engineering
    The Department endeavours to provide an outstanding education and top-notch environment for learning and research complemented by excellence in teaching. The Department has qualified and experienced faculty members with several years of exposure in Electronics and Communication Engineering and its allied fields. The Department offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs that equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to become experts in the domain of electronics and communication. The curriculum includes core domains such as VLSI, electronic circuits, signals and systems, communication theory, and digital signal processing. With its best-in-class facilities, the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) faculty members are affiliated with several esteemed technical associations and societies. These include prominent organisations such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), International Union of Radio Science (URSI), IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S), International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS), Internet Society (IS), Kolkata Chapter, International Association of Engineers (IAENG) etc;

  • Civil Engineering
    The Department of Civil Engineering, since its inception in 2013 has been known for its commitment to providing a well-rounded education combining theoretical foundations with hands-on experience. Students in the department engage in coursework and research that pertains to the developing environment, which includes structures such as buildings, bridges, roads, dams, and airports, as well as infrastructure systems like water supply networks and sewage treatment plants. All has been accomplished by incorporating the curriculum with the core courses in various areas of Civil Engineering, which include Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Water Resources Engineering. The program also comprised laboratory courses, fieldwork, and project work to give students hands-on experience in different aspects of Civil Engineering.
    In addition to technical skills, Civil Engineers possess excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork abilities. The Department strives to take the initiative of workshops, coding and aptitude tests, and talk sessions, facilitating the industry experience with the internships.

    Digital Theodolite ( Least Count 5), Total Station ( Least Count 1), Auto level, Pelton Turbine (1.5 kW at 2750 min^-1 at 6.5 bar), Francis Turbine ( Output: 1kW at 3500 min^-1 at 4.2 bar), Nephelometer, Spectrophotometer, Electric Muffle furnace, Chloroscope, Digital Compression, Testing Machine (2000 kN), Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Testing Machine ( Frequency Range: 20-150 kHz), Rebound Hammer, Different Structural units like Arches, Beams, Buckling rods, Bridge structures etc., are also available in the Structural Laboratory.
    Further, the students have exposure in the state-of-the-art lab facilities at premier technical institutes like IIT Kanpur and NIT Durgapur.
    Mechanical Engineering
    Since its establishment in 2014, the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been fostering its student’s growth by staying abreast of the latest industrial and technological advancements. With a dedicated faculty comprising highly qualified and experienced members in all streams of mechanical engineering, the department consistently strives to offer world-class education and research facilities. An interactive relationship between students and staff is maintained, allowing the students to develop a strong foundation. The department emphasises providing knowledge in the fundamentals of mechanical engineering, interdisciplinary learning, innovation, creativity, and problem-solving. Currently, the department offers 4-year B.Tech undergraduate (UG) and doctoral (PhD) programs.

  • Humanities and Social Sciences
    The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences was established in 2010 to provide students with a deep sense of awareness through the study of Literature and Language. The department offers courses in Economics, English, and Management and emphasises the development of cognitive abilities by encouraging students to visualise abstract ideas before giving them a form. To further enhance the academic skills of students, the department recently organised a workshop on "Building Proficiency in Academic Writing" with experts from IIM Ahmedabad and other universities from across the globe. As a part of its long-term agenda, the department plans to offer courses on communicative skills, phonetics, and linguistics, along with certified courses in some regional and European languages. With its focus on interdisciplinary learning and holistic development, the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences is committed to providing students with a well-rounded education.

    Mathematics
    The Department of Mathematics, established in 2010, has proven to be a valuable addition to the institute, emerging as an impressive and independent unit.     Chemistry
    The Department of Chemistry was established in 2010 with a vision to embrace the changing landscape of the subject. Often hailed as the central science, Chemistry unites several other sciences, such as Physics, Mathematics, Biology, Medicine, the Earth, and Environmental Sciences. The department boasts of a passionate faculty who are dedicated to both teaching and researching cutting-edge projects. National funding agencies like the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Biotechnology back their research. In addition to this, the department has also arranged a series of seminars featuring renowned professors and scientists.     The Department of Physics at the Institute has a long-standing history, being established alongside the institute itself in 2010. Additionally, the Department has established research collaborations with prestigious institutions like the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics in Kolkata, Jadavpur University, also in Kolkata, and the Harish-Chandra Research Institute in Allahabad.
